The Multidimensional Role of a University Legal Clinic in Ensuring the Organization and Effectiveness of its Activities

The article examines the multidimensional role of a university legal clinic in ensuring the proper organization and effectiveness of its activities in the context of current transformations in the legal system and legal education. It is substantiated that a legal clinic serves not only as an educational structural unit of a higher education institution, but also as an independent institutional mechanism for implementing educational, social, human rights, awareness-raising, and innovative functions. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the regulatory and legal framework governing the activities of legal clinics in Ukraine, especially in the context of ensuring access to justice, developing the system of free legal aid, and introducing mediation as an alternative means of dispute resolution.
It has been determined that the effectiveness of a legal clinic largely depends on the degree of integration between students’ theoretical training and practical activity, which is implemented through students’ participation in providing legal assistance under the supervision of academic mentors. The educational function of a legal clinic consists in developing students’ practical skills in applying legal norms, fostering legal reasoning, and building the ability to resolve real legal situations. An important element is acquiring experience in professional communication with clients, working with legal documents, and complying with the standards of professional ethics. In addition, the clinical form of education promotes the development of responsibility, independence, and critical thinking in future lawyers. It is proved that a legal clinic contributes to the formation of future lawyers’ professional competencies, the development of legal reasoning, communication skills, and adherence to the ethical standards of the legal profession.
The paper also reveals the significance of legal clinics as an element of a university’s social responsibility, ensuring legal support for vulnerable groups of the population and raising the level of legal culture in society. It is concluded that there is a need for further improvement of the organizational models of legal clinic functioning, expansion of their areas of activity, and strengthening of their role in the system of ensuring access to justice.
