Clinical legal education in the context of Ukraine’s war for independence and the discussion on European integration: status and prospects for development

The aim of this study is to identify the current challenges and needs of legal clinics, to systematise and analyse them, to examine new tools and methods for enhancing the practical (clinical) training of future lawyers within the discourse of European integration, and to develop proposals for participants in the legal clinic movement aimed at revitalising their activities, depending on their functional purpose and nature of work, as well as the identified contemporary needs in the context of war and European integration.
The contemporary challenges and needs of legal clinics have been identified, and they have been systematised and analysed. It is therefore proposed to classify the identified needs in the activities of legal clinics into the following categories: security needs; organisational and technical needs; staffing needs; legal needs; financial needs; and communication needs.
New tools and methods for enhancing the practical (clinical) training of future lawyers within the discourse of European integration have been examined. An innovative method of working with clients is gradually gaining popularity; this is shared by our European colleagues from the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law during training sessions with legal clinics as part of cooperation with the ALCU, which focuses on the application of international human rights standards directly in everyday practice.
Proposals have been drawn up for participants in the legal clinic movement to enhance their activities, depending on their functional purpose and the nature of their work, as well as the current needs identified in the context of the war and European integration, namely: there is a need to strengthen the internationalisation of activities to accelerate European integration processes; to advocate for their interests and address their needs at the level of higher education institutions and the Ukrainian Association of Law Clinics.
